Manager in Training Program

As an Instructional Design Manager for Jamba at FOCUS Brands, I took part in a complete redesign and redeployment of store-level management training for a system of over 700 stores. The existing training had become outdated and needed a refresh in content and delivery to remain relevant. Due to a change in corporate structure, the program had also become inaccurate in some important areas, making the new program a critical need. To meet this need, our team was able to release Shiftleader training to all stores as a first phase, followed by Assistant General Manager and General Manager training a few months later.

Reimagined From the Ground Up

In designing the new Manager in Training program, we not only examined all existing content for inaccuracies and required updates, we also set out to create a different dynamic for the program. One that would connect the training manager and manager in training in new ways throughout the entirety of the program, ensuring well trained managers that emerge from the program with the skills needed to operate a Jamba store with both confidence and competence.

A Measure of Success

In order to acheive this goal of both confidence and competence in their new role, we found it necessary to add time to the program at the Shiftleader level to ensure successful outcomes. This additional time is, in large part, spent in active on-the-job training that is critical to the development of new managers. As a testament to the success of the new program, we received no push back from the system about the added time despite the increase in labor costs. 

Changes in hours at the AGM and GM levels were in the form of a shift from online learning activities to active on-the-job training to better prepare the new managers for real-world situations.


The Manager in Training E-Learning Modules

The e-learning modules for the Manager in Training program were designed to deliver key information and training MITs will need in their new role. Content is delivered via reading comprehension, interactive activities, and role-play scenarios. Learning is validated via a weekly knowledge check.


The Manager in Training Workbooks

A companion to the online learning component of the program, the Manager in Training Workbooks were also designed to facilitate the interactions between the training manager and the manager in training throughout the program. 

The workbook begins with a welcome to the program followed by an in depth look at the leadership competencies that are woven throughout the program. Next is an overview of the structure of the program and the workbook itself, with in-depth explanations of what to expect and how to use the tools provided. Finally, the content pages themselves.
