Jamba Team Member Training

As an Instructional Design Manager for Jamba at FOCUS Brands, I took part in a complete redesign and redeployment of store-level team member training for a system of over 700 stores. We began with an outdated binder system of reading comprehension based training and transformed and re-imagined the content to deliver a hands-on, trainer-guided, blended learning program that brought training at Jamba to a whole new level.

Designed with the bottom line in mind, we shifted training hours from non-productive time to productive time by moving team members away from reading in the back of house to training on the front line where they are helping guests as they learn. This was accomplished by delivering content in new, engaging, and efficient ways and then reinforcing that content with hands-on time learning with a trainer.

These changes not only resulted in well trained team members that developed confidence and competence quickly, they also delivered significant savings to the Jamba system with annualized first year labor cost savings of $100,000.

Engaging Digital Content

The new program is comprised of 8 courses that deliver content primarily via video that is both engaging and informative. Training also includes some interactive exercises. The Journey to the Perfect Smoothie is one example module from the program that includes both video and interactive content.

The Team Member Training Program Guide

The remaining content not suitable for video is housed in the Team Member Training Program Guide. This guide serves a number of purposes in addition to the remaining content including providing an overview of the program, details on planning for training, and information on delivering effective training.

Team Member Certification

Team members are certified after completion of both a final knowledge check and a practical hands-on validation that verifies the trainee’s competence in performing key tasks required for day to day operations. Once this is complete, the team is brought together for the presentation of the team member's Whirl Pin.
